A violent clash at Kraboa Coaltar in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region has left one person dead and several others injured.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 16, 2025, and reportedly involved residents and alleged land guards who had been terrorising the community over land disputes.
Ezekiel Perry, a local resident, revealed on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem that the deceased, an innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire while returning from a nearby toilet. “There was an indiscriminate firing of gunshots, leading to his death and injuries to many others,” Perry said.
According to Perry, the clashes were sparked by land guards allegedly brought into the area by the Coaltar chief, Barima Okekrebesi Asiedu II.
He claimed the land guards arrived in six to seven cars and on motorbikes, armed with guns and cutlasses, to assert control over disputed lands.
Despite police intervention, calm was not restored for over three hours, with residents accusing the security forces of failing to take decisive action. The injured were rushed to the Coaltar Health Centre and Koforidua for treatment, while the deceased’s body has been sent to the mortuary.
Residents have expressed frustration, stating that repeated attempts to resolve the land issues and address the presence of land guards in the area have been unsuccessful.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police are yet to issue an official statement on the matter. The community is calling for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure lasting peace in the area.
