GBC DG Calls for Innovation as AI, Cloud Transform Broadcasting
Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Anim Alhassan

The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Anim Alhassan, has called on broadcasters across Africa to embrace innovation while maintaining credible journalism as artificial intelligence, cloud technology and digital platforms transform the broadcasting industry.

He said broadcasting was undergoing a profound transformation, with traditional boundaries between television, radio, digital platforms, streaming services and social media increasingly disappearing.

Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, West Africa: Conference on AI, Cloud and Future Broadcast, Prof. Alhassan said audiences were consuming content across multiple devices and choosing when and how they accessed media.

He noted that technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics and cloud broadcasting were redefining the production and distribution of content.

According to him, the changes presented significant opportunities but also raised important questions about the relevance of broadcasters, financing credible content, balancing innovation with cultural identity and protecting the public interest.

Prof. Alhassan said the convention provided an opportunity for broadcasters and industry stakeholders to move beyond discussing challenges and focus on sharing solutions, building partnerships and developing a collective vision for the future of broadcasting.

“We must embrace innovation whilst investing in credible journalism, local production, talent development and sustainable business models,” he said.

He stressed the importance of collaboration among broadcasters and technology companies, telecommunications operators, financial institutions, regulators, academia and audiences.

Prof. Alhassan further noted that Africa’s youthful and connected population, rich cultures and growing creative economy presented significant opportunities for the continent’s media industry.

He said West Africa, with its vibrant media landscape, could position itself as a hub for African content, innovation and enterprise.

As host of the convention in collaboration with Broadcast Media Africa, Prof. Alhassan said GBC was reaffirming its commitment to advancing broadcasting in Ghana, West Africa and the wider African continent.

He said GBC, as Ghana’s public service broadcaster, recognised the need to evolve, become more innovative and remain audience-focused and responsive.

“This requires partnerships, investments and openness to new ideas,” he said.

Prof. Alhassan urged participants to use the two-day convention to share success stories, discuss challenges and explore practical solutions, stressing that the true measure of the gathering would be the partnerships and initiatives that continue beyond the convention.
