Ghana Tourism Authority To Launch ‘Clean The Beach’ Campaign
The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) is set to launch a nationwide beach clean-up campaign under the theme "The Blue Ghana Initiative: Protecting Our Beaches, Preserving Our Future" as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and strengthen Ghana's tourism industry.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Chief Executive Officer of the GTA, Maame Efua Houadjeto, will see coordinated clean-up exercises across selected beaches in Accra and surrounding coastal communities.
The campaign comes in the aftermath of the devastating June 29 floods, which claimed lives, displaced hundreds of residents and caused widespread destruction across parts of the capital. Communities including Alajo, Circle, Kaneshie, Odawna, Tse Addo and Weija were among the worst affected, with disaster management authorities identifying indiscriminate waste disposal into drains and waterways as a major contributor to the flooding.
According to the GTA, the initiative seeks to address not only coastal pollution but also the broader environmental challenges posed by poor waste management.
Environmental experts have consistently warned that refuse dumped into drains is eventually washed into rivers and carried to the sea, where it pollutes beaches, threatens marine ecosystems and undermines livelihoods dependent on Ghana's coastline.
Launching the initiative, Ms Houadjeto stressed that protecting Ghana's beaches is both an environmental and national responsibility.
"Our beaches are not just tourist attractions. They are the face we show the world and an inheritance we owe future generations. Every piece of plastic that chokes a drain in Accra has the potential to end up on our shores. We cannot continue to treat our environment as someone else's responsibility. Cleaning our beaches and keeping them clean is a national duty that belongs to all of us."
She explained that the Blue Ghana Initiative is intended to become a national movement that places environmental sustainability at the heart of tourism development while encouraging citizens to actively protect the country's natural heritage.
The Authority is also appealing to manufacturers of bottled water, beverages and other plastic-packaged products to support the campaign by investing in responsible plastic waste management, expanding recycling initiatives and promoting public education on proper waste disposal.
According to the GTA, tackling plastic pollution requires collaboration among government, industry and citizens to achieve lasting environmental change.
The Authority further expressed support for the Government of Ghana's plans to phase out harmful single-use plastics, including takeaway food containers and similar products, describing the policy as a significant step toward protecting Ghana's coastline and building cleaner, healthier communities.
As part of measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of the campaign, the GTA announced plans to establish the Blue Ghana Foundation, a dedicated platform that will mobilise financial and technical support from individuals, corporate organisations, development partners and philanthropists to fund beach conservation, environmental education and coastal protection initiatives.
The clean-up campaign will complement ongoing sanitation and disaster recovery efforts following the recent floods. The GTA said it will work closely with community groups, hospitality businesses, resort operators, schools, youth organisations, civil society organisations and volunteers to implement the exercise successfully.
Details of the participating beaches and campaign schedule are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
For the GTA, the initiative represents a broader vision of tourism development that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.
"Our beaches are national treasures, economic lifelines and the face of Ghana to the world. Protecting them is not the responsibility of government alone. It is a shared duty that belongs to every Ghanaian and every institution that calls Ghana home," Ms Houadjeto said.
