Kufuor Backs APIMI to Drive African Integration Through Media
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has thrown his support behind the Africa Public Interest Media Initiative (APIMI), describing it as an opportunity to use the media to advance the interests of African citizens.
Mr Kufuor, who is a founding patron of APIMI, said the initiative should move beyond discussions about Africa and translate the continent’s shared aspirations into practical action.
Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, he explained that the three elements of the initiative’s name reflected its purpose.
“Africa” represents the continent and its people as a unit, while “public interest” focuses on the dignity, rights and welfare of African citizens.
“Media,” he said, represents the means through which Africans can know one another, share knowledge and opportunities, and make their voices heard.
The word “initiative”, he added, reflected the need to move the idea beyond discussions and into practical action.
Mr Kufuor said APIMI could help bring Africa closer to its citizens by connecting people across national boundaries and strengthening communication among African societies.
He said the initiative also supported the idea of a “borderless Africa”, although he stressed that this did not mean the disappearance of national sovereignty.
Rather, he said, borderlessness should involve creating a shared African consciousness in which citizens can understand and engage with developments in other African countries.
He said an African in Ghana should be able to understand developments in countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Egypt as part of a shared African experience.
