Kufuor: AI Can Help Break Language Barriers Across Africa
Former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor has highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to strengthen communication and knowledge-sharing among Africans.
Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, Mr Kufuor said digitalisation had created opportunities for Africans to connect across borders on a scale that previous generations could hardly have imagined.
He said digital platforms could instantly cross national boundaries, while artificial intelligence could help overcome language barriers and broaden access to knowledge.
“Artificial intelligence can help overcome language barriers and expand access to knowledge,” he said.
According to Mr Kufuor, the African media could become an “electronic classroom” capable of connecting young people, sharing ideas and opportunities, and helping citizens understand developments across the continent.
He said this was particularly important because Africa was home to a large and growing youthful population with increasing access to education, information and technology.
Mr Kufuor argued that Africa’s technological progress should be directed towards empowering citizens rather than simply adopting technology for its own sake.
He said the combination of media, digitalisation and emerging technologies could help Africans communicate with one another, strengthen the voice of citizens and enable the continent to engage the wider world with greater confidence.
He urged stakeholders to seize the opportunities presented by new technologies to overcome longstanding barriers and accelerate Africa’s development.
