West Africa Can Become Hub for African Content, Innovation – GBC DG
The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Prof. Anim Alhassan, has said West Africa has the potential to position itself as a major hub for African content, innovation and enterprise.
He said the region’s vibrant media landscape, combined with Africa’s youthful and increasingly connected population, rich cultural heritage and growing creative economy, presented significant opportunities for the broadcasting industry.
Speaking at the 2026 Broadcasters Convention, West Africa: Conference on AI, Cloud and Future Broadcast, Prof. Alhassan said broadcasters must take advantage of the changing media environment to develop content that reflects Africa’s identity while responding to the evolving needs of audiences.
He noted that broadcasting was rapidly changing, with traditional boundaries between television, radio, digital platforms, streaming services and social media increasingly disappearing.
According to him, audiences now consume content across multiple devices and at their convenience, while technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics and cloud broadcasting are changing how content is produced and distributed.
Prof. Alhassan said these developments created opportunities for African broadcasters to expand their reach but also required the industry to address challenges relating to credible content, financing, cultural identity and the protection of the public interest.
He called for greater investment in local production and talent development, as well as the adoption of sustainable business models capable of supporting the growth of the African media industry.
He also stressed the need for collaboration between broadcasters and technology companies, telecommunications operators, financial institutions, regulators, academia and audiences.
Prof. Alhassan said GBC’s decision to host the convention in collaboration with Broadcast Media Africa reflected its commitment to advancing broadcasting in Ghana, West Africa and the wider continent.
He said the convention should serve as a platform for stakeholders to share successful experiences, confront industry challenges and develop practical solutions.
Prof. Alhassan added that the real impact of the gathering would be measured by the partnerships and initiatives that survive beyond the convention.
He expressed hope that the discussions would help build a broadcasting ecosystem that is innovative, sustainable, credible and distinctively African.
