Haaland Scores Twice to Dump Brazil Out of World Cup
Erling Haaland scored twice in the closing stages as Norway stunned five-time world champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 on Sunday to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After a tightly contested first half, Haaland finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, rising above the Brazilian defence to head home a cross from Andreas Schjelderup.
The Norwegian striker sealed the victory in the 90th minute after Schjelderup won possession and delivered a precise pass into the penalty area. Haaland calmly fired a low shot beyond the Brazilian goalkeeper to double Norway's advantage.
The two goals took Haaland's tally at the tournament to seven, drawing him level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé as the competition's joint-leading scorers.
Brazil pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Neymar converted a penalty, but the late goal proved only a consolation as the South Americans bowed out of the tournament.
Earlier in the match, Brazil had squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded a penalty for a foul by Kristoffer Ajer on Matheus Cunha. However, Bruno Guimarães failed to convert from the spot in the 13th minute.
Norway's victory marks one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and sends them into the quarter-finals, while Brazil's hopes of securing a sixth FIFA World Cup title come to an unexpected end.
