Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz launched a scathing critique of officiating and VAR decisions following the intense encounter between the England national football team and the Ghana national football team, insisting his side were denied a “clear penalty” and questioning the reliability of video assistant refereeing at the tournament.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz expressed disbelief over what he perceived as missed decisions in Ghana’s favour, raising doubts about the consistency and effectiveness of VAR.

“I’m not sure if VAR is still working in the World Cup. Do we still have VAR? Is it working? I have some doubts about that,” he said pointedly, suggesting the system had failed to intervene at key moments.

The Portuguese tactician insisted Ghana were denied a major opportunity during the game, claiming a “clear penalty against England” was overlooked and arguing that the incident should also have resulted in a sending-off.

“It’s another penalty that they need to give to Ghana. A clear penalty and a red card. Do you have any doubts about that?” he asked rhetorically, challenging the media’s interpretation of the incident.

Queiroz did not hold back in his frustration, sarcastically adding that VAR appeared absent at crucial moments of the contest. “Once again, VAR went for a coffee, and it’s natural. I would like them to also take my coffee once in a while,” he remarked, blending humour with criticism.

Despite his anger over the officiating, Queiroz acknowledged the balance of the match, admitting that England had more possession while Ghana matched them in intensity and chances created.

“At the end of the day, that’s why I say it was a fair result. They played more time with the ball; we fought more, we fought better, and we created our chances,” he said.

He concluded that the draw reflected the overall flow of the game, with both sides having moments to win it late on. “They have their chances at the end. I think they are happy, and I am happy also with the draw,” he added.
