A Ghanaian Islamic cleric has cautioned young people against entering into marriage before travelling abroad, warning that leaving a spouse behind while pursuing opportunities overseas can create serious challenges.

The cleric advised those who have plans to travel abroad while preparing for marriage to consider postponing the union until they return, especially when their immigration status and future plans remain uncertain.

“If you ever have the opportunity to travel abroad while planning to marry, don’t go ahead with the marriage, but rather you can proceed with the marriage when you return from your travel, especially when you don't know when you will get your papers when you get there. Otherwise, you’ll simply be buying a newspaper for others to read,” he cautioned.

He explained that prolonged separation, uncertainty over legal status and the pressures of adapting to life abroad can place strain on relationships and marriages.

The cleric urged young people to carefully consider the timing of major life decisions and ensure they have stability and clarity before committing to marriage.
