Morocco Beats Netherlands On Penalties To Reach World Cup Last 16
Morocco booked their place in the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in Monterrey, in a match that swung wildly between emotion, resilience and heartbreak.
The Atlas Lions, who dominated large stretches of the contest, eventually triumphed 3-2 on penalties after a tense 120 minutes ended level, with Dutch forward Cody Gakpo briefly appearing to have settled the tie in emotional circumstances.
Gakpo, who recently revealed the loss of his unborn son, started for the Netherlands despite his personal grief and produced a moment of brilliance in the 72nd minute, finishing off a lightning-fast counterattack to put his side ahead. His strike was met with an emotional celebration from teammates, with the Liverpool forward clearly carrying the weight of the moment.
But Morocco refused to surrender.
Deep into stoppage time, Issa Diop rose highest to thump home a dramatic equaliser, sending the game into extra time and setting up a nerve-shredding conclusion.
Earlier, Morocco had dictated large portions of the match, forcing Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen into several key saves while also striking the woodwork through Achraf Hakimi, who marked his 100th international appearance with a commanding performance.
The Dutch also threatened in flashes, with Micky van de Ven testing Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou from distance in a tightly contested first half marked by physical battles across the pitch.
Extra time brought more drama, with Verbruggen producing one of the saves of the tournament to deny Soufiane Rahimi after a dazzling run from the substitute.
With neither side able to find a winner, the match was decided from the penalty spot — where tension reached its peak.
Teun Koopmeiners gave the Netherlands an early edge, but Morocco stayed alive as both sides traded misses and moments of fortune, including a crucial effort from Justin Kluivert that struck the post.
Wout Weghorst and Chemsdine Talbi both converted under pressure before Quinten Timber’s tame effort was saved in what proved a decisive swing.
Crysencio Summerville was also denied by Bounou, whose crucial save opened the door for Morocco to seize control.
Achraf Hakimi’s miss threatened to tilt the balance again, but it was Ismail Saibari who ultimately held his nerve, sending Verbruggen the wrong way to seal Morocco’s progression and spark jubilant celebrations.
The victory sends Morocco into the last 16 against Canada in Houston, while the Netherlands are left to reflect on a painful exit marked by missed chances and penalty heartbreak.
