VIDEO: Farmer Seeks Help After Fire Destroys Yam Farm in Northern Ghana

A devastating fire in the Northern Region has destroyed the livelihood of a 35-year-old farmer, Sampson Nakuwu, leaving him emotionally and financially devastated. The fire, which occurred under unclear circumstances, consumed over 1,400 tubers of yam and more than 5,000 yam sets in Ocherepe, a community within the Kpandai District.

Sampson Nakuwu, who invested about GH₵7,000 into his farm, described the tragic event as both unexpected and life-altering.

Speaking to Graphic Online, Nakuwu recalled how the fire broke out just before New Year’s Day, while he was harvesting yams elsewhere. Despite managing to rescue two children who were inside the shed, Nakuwu was unable to determine the fire’s cause.

The loss has left Nakuwu and his family of seven in dire straits. “I don’t know how to provide for my wife, children, and parents,” Nakuwu lamented. “This Christmas and New Year were supposed to bring joy, but instead, they brought misery.”

The destruction has also left him unable to repay a loan he took to finance the farming venture. With all his harvested yams and farming supplies destroyed, Nakuwu has appealed for public support to help him rebuild his farm and sustain his family.

“This situation is very serious. Without help, I don’t know how to start life in 2025,” he said. Nakuwu urged individuals, organisations, and the government to assist him in getting back to farming.
