NPP’s Charles Forson Declares Winner of Tema Central Election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the winner of the Tema Central parliamentary election.

The announcement was made on Sunday, January 5, 2025, following the collation of results from two outstanding polling stations, as ordered by the High Court.

After the court-mandated collation, Charles Forson garnered 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating Ebi Bright of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who secured 18,815 votes. An independent candidate polled 209 votes, with 114 rejected ballots out of a total of 38,038 votes cast.

The Tema Central election became a point of contention after the NPP challenged the initial declaration of Ebi Bright as the winner. The party argued that the collation process was incomplete and that the declaration was made in error.

The High Court in Accra upheld the NPP’s argument on Saturday, January 4, 2025, ordering the EC to complete the collation under tight security provided by the Ghana Police Service.

The court’s ruling also addressed similar disputes in three other constituencies: Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central. In all four cases, the rulings favoured the NPP.

Following the court’s directive, the EC promptly undertook the collation process on Sunday to ensure that results could be finalised and gazetted ahead of the swearing-in of new Members of Parliament, scheduled to occur in two days.

The National Democratic Congress has expressed its intention to appeal the High Court’s rulings on all four constituencies, including Tema Central. The party maintains that the initial declarations were valid and has vowed to pursue the matter further in court.

The outcome in Tema Central and the other three constituencies could significantly impact the balance of power in the newly elected Parliament. With tensions running high, all eyes are on the swearing-in ceremony and the potential repercussions of the NDC’s appeals.
