Ghana FinTech Association Applauds Sam George’s Appointment as Minister-Designate for Communication and Innovation

The Ghana FinTech and Payments Association has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Hon. Samuel Nartey George following his nomination as the Minister-Designate for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.

This nomination is seen as a significant step in advancing Ghana’s digital transformation agenda under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership.

Hon. Sam George’s extensive experience in the communications sector has made him a prominent figure in Ghana’s digital policy landscape. Between 2014 and 2016, he served as a communications specialist at the Office of the President, playing a pivotal role in shaping national communication strategies.

Since 2017, as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, he has been a member of the Communications Committee, contributing significantly to legislative discussions on digital policies.

His recent vocal support for technological advancements, particularly his involvement in the launch of Ghana’s 5G network, underscores his commitment to improving Ghana’s digital infrastructure.

During the 5G launch, Hon. Sam George highlighted that the 5G network was built upon President Mahama’s foundational initiatives, underscoring the importance of continuity in the nation’s digital growth.

The Ghana FinTech Association is optimistic that under Hon. George’s leadership, the Ministry will prioritise policies that foster innovation and growth within Ghana’s rapidly expanding fintech ecosystem.

Speaking on the appointment, the Association’s President, Mr. Martin Kwame Awagah, expressed enthusiasm about potential collaborations with the Ministry.

“We look forward to working together on developing clear, concise, and supportive regulations and policies that encourage fintech innovation while ensuring consumer protection,” Mr. Awagah stated.

A key area of focus for the Association is expanding and enhancing digital infrastructure, including the improvement of internet network connectivity, particularly the rollout of 5G. This will be critical in facilitating seamless financial transactions across the country.

The Association is hopeful that under Hon. Sam George’s leadership, the Ministry will focus on reducing costs associated with internet usage to create an environment conducive to growth and innovation in the fintech sector.

Furthermore, the Association is eager to work closely with the Ministry to strengthen collaborations between the government and fintech companies to drive inclusive financial solutions in line with Ghana’s cashless agenda. Mr. Awagah emphasised the need for effective capacity-building programs to equip stakeholders with the necessary skills to thrive in the evolving digital economy.

“We believe that through constructive dialogue and partnership, we can contribute to a regulatory environment that balances innovation with security, ultimately benefiting the broader Ghanaian economy,” he said.

The Association has also expressed its support for President Mahama’s proposed initiatives to boost the fintech industry, including the establishment of a $50 million fintech growth fund and the removal of the e-levy on digital transactions.

These initiatives are expected to empower local fintech startups and further reduce transaction costs, facilitating the growth of the digital economy.

As Ghana approaches a new era of digital innovation, the Association is confident that Hon. Sam George’s appointment will pave the way for progressive policies that support the sustainable growth of the fintech sector. The Association is committed to collaborating with the Ministry to ensure that Ghana remains a leader in digital financial services across Africa.
