The Katsina State Police Command has arrested two suspects involved in the abduction and murder of a 12-year-old boy in Dankama, Kaita Local Government Area, after his family was unable to pay the $32,000 ransom demanded for his release.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the community, highlighting the ongoing challenge of kidnapping in the region.
DSP Abubakar Sadiq, spokesperson for the Katsina Police Command, provided details of the crime during a media briefing on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
According to the police, the victim was abducted on January 11, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m. while running an errand to a nearby pharmacy for his mother. That evening, around 9:00 p.m., the kidnappers contacted the boy’s family, demanding $32,000 for his release.
Despite desperate attempts by the family to negotiate, the kidnappers refused to release the boy. Tragically, the boy was murdered, and his body was abandoned on the outskirts of Dankama town, where it was discovered later.
Upon receiving the report, Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Abubakar Musa, directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) to launch an intensive investigation.
On January 13, 2025, police operatives successfully arrested two suspects connected to the crime. The suspects, identified as Muttaka Garba, alias Auta (24), and Yusuf Usman, alias Kwalwa (20), confessed to the abduction and murder of the boy during interrogation.
“The command has recovered the phone used by the suspects to demand the ransom as part of the evidence in this case,” DSP Sadiq revealed.
The suspects are currently in custody as police finalise their investigation. DSP Sadiq confirmed that they will face prosecution in court once investigations are completed.
“This is a heinous crime that has shocked the community, and we are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and his family,” DSP Sadiq assured.
The incident has sparked outrage in Dankama and surrounding areas, with residents demanding stricter measures to curb the rise in kidnapping cases. Many have expressed condolences to the victim’s family and called for more robust security measures to protect vulnerable citizens.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by criminal activities in the region. Law enforcement agencies continue to intensify efforts to combat kidnapping and bring perpetrators to justice.
The Katsina Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens and urged the public to report suspicious activities promptly to aid their efforts.
