Randy Was Very Pro-NPP in the Beginning—Gabby Otchere-Darko Reflects on Dr. Randy Abbey’s Legacy
Dr. Randy Abbey’s departure from Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana after 23 years has ignited reflections on his illustrious career and political affiliations.
Among those paying tribute was Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who shared insights into Dr. Abbey’s early ties to the party.
“Randy was very pro-NPP in the beginning,” Mr. Otchere-Darko remarked during a farewell segment on Metro TV. “I remember he was even being draughted to stand for Parliament… In 2008, when I was doing a lot of work for the NPP with the Danquah Institute’s communications, Randy was part of us.”
Mr. Otchere-Darko also highlighted Dr. Abbey’s personal connections to figures across Ghana’s political divide, including President John Dramani Mahama. “I remember him saying, ‘It would be difficult for me if John Mahama becomes president because he is a very good friend of mine, and I’m very close to Ibrahim Mahama.’”
Dr. Abbey’s ability to maintain professionalism and neutrality throughout his broadcasting career, despite his political relationships, has been a hallmark of his success.
Dr. Abbey, who made his final appearance on Good Morning Ghana on January 8, 2025, is lauded as one of Ghana’s most respected broadcasters. Metro TV described his exit as “the end of an era,” underscoring his significant contributions to the media landscape.
Beyond journalism, Dr. Abbey has made a name for himself in sports administration, serving as an executive council member of the Ghana Football Association and president of Kpando Hearts of Lions Football Club.
His dedication to excellence earned him the Order of the Volta and a Grand Medal in 2006 for his role in Ghana’s historic FIFA World Cup qualification.
While Dr. Abbey’s next steps remain undisclosed, his departure leaves a lasting legacy.
Mr. Otchere-Darko’s tribute encapsulated the admiration many feel for the broadcaster: “He’s a model to many, and wherever he’s going from here, I believe it is a better place. I wish him well.”
As he moves into a new chapter, Dr. Randy Abbey’s contributions to media, politics, and sports will continue to inspire future generations.
