Afenyo-Markin Blasts Mahama’s ‘Tot Tot’ Ministerial Appointments

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has described President John Mahama’s initial ministerial nominations as “tot tot” appointments, criticising what he sees as the slow and piecemeal approach to forming a cabinet.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, January 9, Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the president’s commitment to delivering on campaign promises of a ready and efficient government.

“When the names were read out by Mr. Speaker, only three names were mentioned. This ‘tot tot’ appointment is unacceptable,” he said. “This is a government that promised a 24-hour economy while in opposition. They told us they were ready to govern, so where are the rest of the ministers?”

Earlier in the day, President Mahama nominated Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Finance Minister-designate, John Abdulai Jinapor as Energy Minister-designate, and Dr. Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister for Justice-designate.

The minority leader argued that the nominations fall short of addressing critical sectors, citing the lack of announcements for ministries such as Agriculture, Roads and Highways, Lands and Natural Resources, and Education.

He further criticised the government for allegedly leaking the list of nominees to the media before formally presenting it to Parliament, calling it a breach of parliamentary protocol.

Meanwhile, minority chief whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has assured a thorough vetting process for the nominees, urging them to come fully prepared.

“This is not going to be business as usual. We will subject every nominee to a rigorous vetting process to ensure competence and integrity,” he stated.

On the other side of the aisle, Majority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah called for cooperation from the minority to facilitate smooth governance.

“We understand the frustrations that come with being in opposition, but we urge the minority to work with us to keep this House functional and effective,” he said, urging a collaborative approach to addressing national issues.
