Police Invite Afenyo-Markin Over Alleged Assault on Officer at Protest

The Ghana Police Service has formally invited Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist in an investigation into an alleged assault on a police officer during the recent “Save the Judiciary” demonstration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 6, the service confirmed that it has reviewed multiple video footages of the incident, which captured Afenyo-Markin appearing to lash out at an officer behind a barricade near Parliament House.

Following its initial review, the Police Service has written to the Speaker of Parliament, requesting the release of the MP for Effutu to facilitate the ongoing inquiry. The officer at the centre of the altercation will also be questioned as part of the process.

The incident, which occurred during a protest march to present a petition on judicial independence, has sparked public debate after footage of the scuffle went viral.

Afenyo-Markin has since claimed he was struck forcefully in the chest by the officer, identified as Constable Forson, and was reacting in protest.

Meanwhile, Bright Ofori Ampofo, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, has come to the defence of the Minority Leader, asserting that the MP was provoked. “Honourable Afenyo-Markin did not start the incident—he responded after being hit. He is a law-abiding leader who believes in due process,” he stated.

The Police Service has assured the public that its investigation will be thorough and impartial, as calls grow for accountability and clarity over the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
