Kofi Adams to design modalities to cater for retired footballers

Kofi Adams, the minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has reassured Ghanaians of his dedication to improving the welfare of retired footballers and tackling financial challenges within the sports sector if given parliamentary approval.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, Adams highlighted the financial and health struggles faced by many retired footballers. He stressed the importance of structured support to ensure their well-being and proposed measures to assist them.

“We will encourage active sportsmen to contribute to a pension scheme. If I am approved, we will come out with modalities to see what we can do for those who have retired,” he stated.

Adams also addressed broader financial challenges within the sports sector, acknowledging the pressing need for reforms to resolve outstanding debts.

He underscored his commitment to working with stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions.

“I’m aware of the GHC468 million debt that must be dealt with. We will strategise to ensure that the National Sports Authority (NSA) plays its role as regards Black Stars funding to resolve the issues,” he assured.

His remarks have sparked optimism among sports professionals and industry watchers, who hope his proposed initiatives will bring meaningful reforms to the sector. If approved, Adams’ tenure could mark a significant shift in prioritising the financial stability of both active and retired athletes while addressing the overall sustainability of Ghana’s sports sector.
