Otto Addo Confirms Benjamin Asare as Black Stars’ First-Choice Goalkeeper

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Benjamin Asare is now Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, following his impressive performances in training and recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper has kept two clean sheets in his first two national team appearances, solidifying his position between the posts.

Speaking after Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar, Addo stated:

“At this point, the next game is in June, but at the moment, I think he [Benjamin Asare] is number one. We have decided on him. He did well in training.”

However, the coach emphasised that competition remains strong, with Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joe Wollacott continuing to push for a starting spot.

“There’s not a huge gap between him and the other goalkeepers. We are really thankful for how Ati Zigi and Wollacott supported him—it shows great teamwork.”

With Ghana’s qualification campaign resuming in June, Asare’s status as the Black Stars’ number one will be closely monitored in the coming months.
