Ghana To Roll Out Smart Screening Tech To Curb Removal Of Shoes and Belts at Accra Airport

Travellers using Accra International Airport will soon say goodbye to removing shoes, belts and laptops at security checkpoints, as John Dramani Mahama unveiled cutting-edge screening technology alongside Ghana’s new e-Visa platform.

At the launch event in Accra, President Mahama announced that advanced 3D scanners are being installed at Terminals 2 and 3 to streamline passenger processing and eliminate long-standing travel inconveniences.

The new systems, he explained, will allow passengers to keep laptops and liquids in their bags, significantly reducing delays and congestion at airport security.

More notably, he revealed that additional equipment arriving in August will completely remove the requirement for travellers to take off their shoes and belts.

“That experience has been unpleasant for most travellers. Very soon, it will no longer be necessary,” he said.

The airport upgrade forms part of a broader government strategy to modernise public services through technology and improve Ghana’s global competitiveness.

President Mahama said the reforms are designed to deliver a seamless, efficient and dignified travel experience while maintaining high security standards.

The announcement was made during the launch of Ghana’s electronic visa system, a key component of the country’s digital transformation agenda.

The platform is expected to simplify visa applications, reduce processing times and eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks associated with manual systems.

According to the president, the system will also be expanded to cover work and residence permits, creating a fully automated immigration ecosystem.

He noted that digitising visa and permit processes will enhance the ease of doing business, attract foreign direct investment and strengthen regulatory compliance.

The initiative also aligns with continental integration efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to free movement and economic cooperation across Africa.

President Mahama stressed that Ghana’s open-door policy sends a strong message to the rest of the continent—that security and openness can coexist.

He urged other African countries to accelerate the implementation of free movement protocols to unlock the full potential of regional trade and mobility.

He further highlighted that the e-Visa platform was developed by Ghanaian engineers, showcasing the country’s growing technological capabilities.

Commending institutions such as the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, he said their collaboration has been key to delivering the reforms.

With smarter screening systems and fully digitised immigration processes on the horizon, Ghana is positioning itself as a modern aviation hub offering travellers not just access but a significantly improved experience.
