Chicago Fire in Talks to Sign De Bruyne After Inter Miami Exits the Race

Kevin De Bruyne’s potential move to Major League Soccer has taken a decisive turn, with Chicago Fire emerging as the leading contenders after Inter Miami stepped away from pursuing the Manchester City star.

The Belgian midfielder, who is set to leave City at the end of the season, was initially on Inter Miami’s discovery list — a designation that gave them exclusive MLS rights to open talks. However, the club has opted not to activate that option, clearing the way for Chicago Fire to initiate discussions.

According to sources familiar with the situation, representatives of De Bruyne are expected to meet with officials from Chicago Fire, who now have the league’s first right to negotiate. The 33-year-old playmaker has not ruled out a move to MLS, especially with European suitors also circling.

Chicago, currently 11th in the Eastern Conference, view the potential signing as a transformational opportunity. Bringing in a player of De Bruyne’s calibre could elevate the team’s profile and performance, injecting both creativity and leadership into a squad in need of a boost.

De Bruyne, a central figure in Manchester City’s golden era under Pep Guardiola, has collected 16 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the club’s first Champions League trophy. His surprise at not being offered a contract extension has fuelled speculation about his next destination.

While a move to Inter Miami would have reunited De Bruyne with global icons like Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, Chicago now stands alone in the MLS race — and could soon become the next home for one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders.
