The National Identification Authority has commenced a nationwide mass registration exercise targeting children aged 6 to 14, starting with the Volta and Oti regions, with a new system designed to issue cards instantly.

Director of Corporate Affairs at the NIA, Williams Ampomah Darlas, disclosed that the initiative aims to register more than 3.1 million children across the country as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s national identification coverage.

Speaking in an interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive, he explained that the exercise is currently being rolled out in selected regions before a broader nationwide expansion.

Mr Ampomah Darlas said the authority has adopted a new approach that allows children to receive their Ghana Cards immediately after registration, eliminating delays associated with previous exercises.

He noted that under earlier registration drives, many applicants failed to collect their cards due to relocation, school transfers or long distances to NIA district offices.

“Past experiences have taught us to print and issue the cards instantly to avoid such challenges,” he said.

According to him, the shift to instant issuance is intended to ensure that no child is left without a national ID due to logistical barriers.

He added that the authority is determined to close gaps that previously affected accessibility and participation in the registration process.

The exercise is being conducted in both public and private schools, bringing registration closer to children and making the process more convenient for families.

The NIA believes this school-based approach will significantly increase enrolment and ensure broader coverage among the targeted age group.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ghana’s identification system and ensure that more citizens are captured in the national database from an early age.
