Benfica Edge Monaco in Seven-Goal Thriller to Reach Champions League Last 16

Benfica survived a spirited Monaco comeback to secure a dramatic 4-3 aggregate victory in the Champions League playoff, sealing their spot in the last 16.

Despite holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Benfica were second-best for much of the return fixture at Estadio da Luz.

Kerem Aktürkoglu capitalised on a Monaco defensive error to put the hosts ahead in the 22nd minute, but Takumi Minamino equalised soon after.

Monaco’s Breel Embolo squandered a golden chance before Eliesse Ben Seghir put the visitors ahead early in the second half.

Benfica regained control when Thilo Kehrer fouled Fredrik Aursnes, allowing Vangelis Pavlidis to convert from the spot.

Substitute George Ilenikhena restored Monaco’s lead on the night, but Orkun Kokcu’s late flick ensured Benfica advanced 4-3 on aggregate.

The Portuguese giants now await a last-16 clash against either Barcelona or Liverpool.
