The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, is in mourning following the passing of veteran actor Columbus Irosanga.
The talented thespian, known for his captivating performances and dedication to the craft, passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of Nigerian cinema.
Irosanga was widely celebrated for his iconic role as the revered chief priest, Igbudu, in the 2001 classic film Isakaba.
His portrayal of the mystical character endeared him to fans and solidified his place as one of Nollywood’s most respected actors.
His death was announced by fellow actress and social activist Hilda Dokubo in an emotional Instagram post on February 6, 2025.
Sharing her grief, Dokubo wrote, “Our uncle Coli @colu_mbusirisoanga has gone to be with the Lord. Ikoli eh dein na mu. There can’t be a shortage of angels in heaven that the few here are called home like this, na! This one is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, and Nollywood.”
Columbus Irosanga had been away from the screen for some time, dedicating himself to academia as a senior lecturer in the Theatre Arts department at the University of Port Harcourt. There, he mentored and shaped the next generation of actors and artists, sharing his wealth of knowledge and experience. His contributions to both the academic and entertainment sectors earned him widespread admiration and respect.
Born and raised in Okrika, Rivers State, Irosanga’s career spanned decades, during which he delivered outstanding performances in various roles. Some of his most notable films include Isakaba (2003) and 7 Kilometre (2015), showcasing his versatility and talent as an actor.
Throughout his illustrious career, he garnered numerous awards and accolades. These include Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Africa Movie Academy Awards), Best Actor in a Drama (City People Entertainment Awards), Most Promising Actor in Nigeria (Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards), and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Best of Nollywood Awards). His contributions to the industry were not only recognised but also deeply appreciated by fans and colleagues alike.
As Nollywood and the entire entertainment fraternity mourn the passing of Columbus Irosanga, tributes continue to pour in from industry colleagues, students, and fans who were touched by his work and teachings.
