Your Gov’t Has Done Spectacularly Well – Ishmael Yamson Tells Mahama

Board Chairman of MTN Ghana, Dr Ishmael Yamson, has commended the government of President John Dramani Mahama for what he described as a remarkable performance in stabilising Ghana’s economy during its first year in office.

Dr Yamson made the remarks while delivering the keynote address at the Annual New Year School and Conference held at the University of Ghana on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

The three-day conference brings together policymakers, academics, business leaders, and development stakeholders to deliberate on national issues and chart a path toward sustainable growth. This year’s theme is “Building the Ghana We Want Together for Sustainable Development.”

Addressing participants on the theme, Dr Yamson highlighted key macroeconomic improvements, particularly the strengthening of the Ghana cedi, as evidence of effective economic management by the government.

“The cedi at the close of 2024 was GHS15.11; at the close of 2025, it was GHS10.65. We must give credit to the government. Mr President, your government has done spectacularly well. Your first year has been simply spectacular,” he stated.

Despite the commendation, Dr Yamson cautioned that the country’s economic challenges are far from over. He noted that while stabilisation has been achieved, Ghana must now focus on deeper structural reforms to ensure long-term economic recovery and shared prosperity.

“What we are seeing is stabilisation. Feeding the paws of the street and listening to the quiet anxieties of the boardroom, I must tell the truth—we are not just at a challenging moment; we are at a definitive crossroads of our national existence,” he said.

“We have stopped the bleeding, yes, but we have not healed the wound. We have managed the crisis, but we have not cured the disease,” he added.

Dr Yamson stressed that sustainable development would require deliberate and consistent economic planning, urging policymakers to move beyond short-term crisis management and focus on reforms that translate current gains into lasting benefits for all Ghanaians.

The Annual New Year School and Conference is regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential policy dialogue platforms, shaping national discourse at the start of each year.
