Achimota Circuit Court Strikes Out Afenyo-Markin’s Defamation Suit Against NEIP CEO
The Achimota Circuit Court has struck out a defamation suit filed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Eric Adjei, after the plaintiff withdrew the case following engagements between the parties.
At a sitting on Tuesday, October 20, counsel for Afenyo-Markin, led by Paa Kwesi Abaidoo, informed the court of the minority leader's decision to withdraw the writ.
Counsel for Eric Adjei, Gideon Koku Abotsi, confirmed that the parties had engaged in discussions, prompting the presiding judge to strike out the writ as withdrawn.
The suit arose from comments by Mr Adjei, who repeated allegations of extortion against Afenyo-Markin after the Minority Leader criticised GoldBod and its Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over alleged losses of $1.9 billion under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Speaking after the proceedings, Mr Abotsi said the decision followed an appeal by a High Court judge for the parties to resolve their differences amicably out of court.
The development comes a week after the High Court struck out a separate defamation suit filed by Afenyo-Markin against Sammy Gyamfi on the grounds that the writ was defective.
The withdrawal means the court did not proceed to determine the substantive defamation claims against Eric Adjei.
