WhatsApp is introducing a built-in message translation feature that allows users to instantly translate messages into their preferred language, the company announced on Tuesday.
The Meta-owned platform said the feature works across one-on-one chats, group conversations, and channel updates. To use it, users can simply long-press a message and tap “Translate”. They can then choose their desired language, with the option to download it for offline use.
For Android users, the update also includes the ability to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, ensuring all future incoming messages in that conversation appear in their chosen language.

Importantly, WhatsApp emphasised that translations happen directly on users’ devices, ensuring messages remain end-to-end encrypted and private.
“With more than 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users closely connected, no matter where they are in the world,” WhatsApp said in a blog post. “But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier. That’s why we’re excited to bring message translations to WhatsApp, so you can more easily communicate across languages.”
Available Languages
- Android users can access translations in English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic.
- iPhone users have access to a broader range, including Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese.
The feature is rolling out gradually to Android and iOS devices starting this week. However, WhatsApp has not disclosed when message translations will be available on its web platform or desktop apps for Windows and Mac.
The rollout comes just months after Apple introduced live translation in Messages, intensifying competition among messaging platforms to offer seamless cross-language communication.
