Samuel Nartey George Announces Second One Million Coders Centre for Asawase

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced plans to establish a second One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) centre at Asawase in the Ashanti Region to accommodate growing demand for digital skills training.

He said the existing Community ICT Centre (CIC) at Asawase was among the most active centres in the country, with strong participation from young people, middle-aged persons, men and women.

During an interaction with trainees at the centre, Mr George commended participants for their commitment to the programme and disclosed that arrangements were underway to expand access to the training.

“I get the reports almost on a weekly basis, and Asawase CIC is one of the most active CICs in the whole country,” he said.

According to the minister, the centre had become fully subscribed, leaving several prospective participants unable to enrol in the programme.

He said he had asked the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Member of Parliament for the area to identify an additional location, adding that a suitable space had already been secured.

“Your MP has already found another location, so we’ll bring additional laptops and do a second centre for Asawase to cover the demand here,” Sam George stated.

He expressed optimism that the second centre would be activated before the end of October 2026.

The minister urged participants to encourage other residents to enrol in the programme, which is designed to equip Ghanaians with digital skills and prepare them for opportunities in the technology sector.

He stressed that trainees should progress beyond the beginner level to intermediate and advanced courses, where they could acquire more specialised skills.

Hon. Sam George said the ministry was also exploring ways to create employment opportunities for graduates of the programme.

“Jobs is really what this is about,” he said, explaining that the government wanted to develop pathways through which trained participants could be absorbed into the job market.

The One Million Coders Programme forms part of the government's digital skills development agenda, with training delivered through centres across the country.

Sam George encouraged trainees to complete the full programme and provide feedback to help the ministry improve its implementation.
