Sam George Delivers 2,000 Additional Laptops to KNUST for 40 New Learning Centres

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced the provision of 2,000 additional laptops to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to expand access to digital skills training under the One Million Coders Programme.

The additional laptops are expected to support the establishment of 40 new learning centres on campus, bringing the total number of centres at the university to 50.

Mr George made the announcement during his working tour of the Ashanti Region, which included a visit to KNUST to assess the implementation and expansion of the programme.

He said the university initially received 500 laptops to support 10 learning centres, but the ministry was expanding its presence to reach more learners within the university community.

“We set up a number of centres, 10 centres on KNUST, 500 laptops were sent there. We’re expanding our footprint there with an additional 2,000 laptops this morning,” he said.

“That will bring an additional 40 sites, so 50 learning centres on campus to take care of the entire educational enclave.”

The expansion is expected to increase opportunities for students and other potential learners to access digital skills training through the programme.

Mr George also disclosed that the ministry was considering partnerships with other tertiary institutions in the region, including Kumasi Technical University, to broaden the initiative’s reach.

The minister’s visit to KNUST forms part of a wider regional assessment of the One Million Coders Programme, alongside inspections of telecommunications infrastructure and rural telephony projects.

The initiative is aimed at expanding access to digital skills and supporting the development of a digitally skilled workforce in Ghana.
