Joyce Bawa Mogtari Denies Kantamanto Land Sale Rumours, Urges Support for Affected Traders

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, special aide to President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, has dismissed rumours that the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government intends to sell the Kantamanto Market land to a private developer.

Her statement follows a devastating fire outbreak at the market, which has left many traders grappling with significant losses.

Mogtari, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed heartfelt sympathy for the affected traders and their families, calling the incident a “devastating tragedy” so early in the New Year. She called for unity and compassion during this challenging time while also condemning attempts to politicise the tragedy.

Addressing the rumours, Mogtari categorically refuted claims of any plans to sell the market land, labelling them as baseless and politically motivated. “It is deeply unfortunate that some individuals have resorted to spreading false rumours that the incoming NDC government intends to sell the Kantamanto land to a private developer,” she stated.

Mogtari emphasised the NDC’s track record of supporting the informal sector, highlighting deliberate policies and interventions aimed at improving traders’ livelihoods. She contrasted this with the outgoing administration, accusing it of selling state assets in a manner widely criticised by Ghanaians.

“The NDC has no intention of continuing such practices,” Mogtari assured, adding that the party remains committed to preserving public resources for the benefit of all citizens.

Mogtari urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the fire, stressing the need to uncover the truth and provide relief to the affected traders. She expressed hope that lessons would be learnt to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The fire at Kantamanto Market has reignited calls for better safety measures in Ghana’s marketplaces. As traders mourn their losses, Mogtari’s statement reflects the incoming administration’s focus on providing tangible support to those affected while addressing the systemic challenges that heighten risks in such environments.

The NDC, she noted, remains committed to fostering an environment where Ghanaian traders can thrive without fear of sudden disruptions to their livelihoods.
