Redesign CSSPS To Accommodate 55K Unplaced BECE Candidates – Adutwum
Former Education Minister Dr Yaw Adutwum has called for the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) to be redesigned to allow unplaced BECE candidates to access available senior high school vacancies through self-placement.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, September 9, he said the current system could continue to exclude candidates if their names are not captured as eligible for self-placement.
He questioned the large number of candidates left out of the initial 2026 placement exercise, saying it could reflect a problem with the placement system.
According to him, the Free SHS policy was deliberately designed to remove the previous cutoff system, which he said excluded about 100,000 candidates from secondary education every year.
He argued that a strict cutoff disproportionately affected children from rural and disadvantaged communities who might not have had the same level of preparation for the BECE as their counterparts in urban areas.
He therefore cautioned that simply directing unplaced candidates to undertake self-placement would not solve the problem if the CSSPS platform had already excluded them from the list of students eligible to select schools.
“If this is the case, then the software developers have to go and redesign the system. Otherwise, when they go and they want to find a school, their name will not be on the system for them to find the school because the system will have excluded them,” he said.
His comment follows the Ministry of Education’s announcement that 54,985 BECE candidates who were not placed in the initial exercise can now use the self-placement process to select schools with available vacancies.
