Government Donates 2,000 Laptops To UG For One Million Coders programme
The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has presented 2,000 laptops to the University of Ghana to support the implementation of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with critical digital skills.
The donation follows an earlier presentation of 500 laptops to the university a few weeks ago as part of efforts to strengthen digital learning and skills development.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to preparing Ghanaian youth for opportunities in a technology-driven world.
“This presentation demonstrates our shared commitment to equipping Ghanaian youth with the digital skills and artificial intelligence literacy needed to thrive in a technology-driven world. It follows our initial handover of 500 laptops a few weeks ago,” he said.
Mr George commended the University of Ghana for integrating the One Million Coders Programme into its academic curriculum, describing the decision as a significant step towards institutionalising digital skills training.
“The University of Ghana has long been a centre of excellence in teaching, research and innovation. Today, however, marks something more than another partnership: the university's decision to weave the One Million Coders Programme permanently into its academic curriculum is an act of genuine foresight.
“Rather than treat digital skills training as an optional extracurricular add-on, the university's leadership has recognised that coding, data literacy and AI competence must now sit alongside literacy and numeracy as basic building blocks of a modern education,” he said.
He further praised the university’s management for ensuring that digital skills development would become a permanent feature of students’ education.
“I commend the vice-chancellor, the university council and management for this bold and far-sighted decision. It ensures that digital skills development is institutionalised, sustained and passed on to every cohort of students long after this handover ceremony is forgotten,” he added.
The One Million Coders Programme is one of the government’s flagship digital transformation initiatives designed to build a workforce equipped with skills in coding, software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data analytics and other emerging technologies.
According to the Ministry, the programme seeks to equip one million Ghanaians with practical digital competencies to improve their employability, promote entrepreneurship and innovation, and prepare them to compete in an increasingly digital global economy.
