Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has disclosed that investigations into widespread complaints about excessive mobile data consumption have revealed that user behaviour and device settings—not pricing manipulation by telecom companies—are primarily responsible.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Friday, August 1, the minister said a task force established at the National Communications Authority (NCA), in collaboration with all mobile network operators (MNOs), had been actively probing the concerns that had gone viral on social media.
“I have seen a number of complaints on social media and set up an operational task force at the NCA and all the MNOs to deal with these complaints,” Mr. George explained.

He noted that every individual complaint referred to the task force was thoroughly investigated, and none had been attributed to deliberate inflation of data charges by telecom providers.
“To put on record, every single complaint that has been referred to the team has been investigated, and all of them have proven that it is user settings and user behaviours that have affected the use of their data. There has been no price tempering,” he clarified.
Mr. George stressed that while the ministry remains committed to safeguarding consumers, regulatory intervention would only occur if there is clear, verifiable evidence of malpractice.
“I will not hesitate to deal decisively with any telco that alters the pricing that has been approved by the NCA. But unless there is evidence of the same, you cannot punish somebody just because people are making a claim that is not backed by evidence,” he stated.
He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to maintaining transparency and accountability in the telecom industry and pledged continued responsiveness to consumer concerns.
“We will continue to deal with every single complaint that comes our way,” the minister assured.
