President Mahama to Reinstate July 1 as a Statutory Holiday

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to restore July 1 as a statutory public holiday, reinstating its historical significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens Day in Ghana.

Speaking during his Thank You tour in the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5, President Mahama outlined his vision to reintroduce the holiday and designate it as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. This initiative, he explained, would allow Ghanaians to reflect on the country’s progress and express gratitude.

“We will have the opportunity as a nation soon to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as enjoined by the Holy Book that says, ‘In all things, give thanks,’” he stated.

To ensure a structured and meaningful observance, President Mahama announced the formation of a committee comprising religious leaders who will oversee preparations for the national event.

He also confirmed that his administration would submit amendments to the Public Holidays Act to Parliament to formally reinstate July 1 as a statutory holiday.

“We will soon present to Parliament amendments to the Public Holidays Act in order that we can restore July 1 as a holiday,” he affirmed.

Additionally, President Mahama reiterated his commitment to fulfilling a longstanding promise to Ghana’s Muslim community by introducing an extra holiday to commemorate the Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Fitr.

“In the amendments of the Republic Holidays Act, we shall also make provisions to fulfil our promise to the Muslim community of an extra holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr,” he said.

The announcement has sparked discussions among various stakeholders, with many welcoming the move as a step toward preserving Ghana’s historical milestones and recognising the contributions of senior citizens. Others are keen to see how the legislative process unfolds to make the proposal a reality.
