MTN Fuels Nigeria’s Digital Future with $2M Tech Talent Boost

MTN Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation by investing more than $2 million in the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative—an ambitious programme designed to train and equip young Nigerians with cutting-edge digital skills to compete globally.

Launched under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, the 3MTT programme aims to build a future-ready workforce by providing access to technical training in high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, software development, cybersecurity, and more.

As a founding partner of the initiative, MTN Nigeria’s contribution includes:

  • $986,000 toward direct technical training support for learners nationwide.
  • $1.02 million in data grants to ensure seamless internet connectivity throughout the programme’s life cycle.
  • $34,000 worth of Raspberry Pi kits for practical learning as part of the Ministry’s Buildathon initiative.

Together, these investments have empowered over 90,000 learners across two training cohorts, delivered via 197 Partner Applied Learning Clusters (ALCs) across the country. The Raspberry Pi kits alone have helped 3,500 students from secondary schools gain hands-on technology experience.

“This programme is a game-changer,” said Dr sun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy. “MTN has been there from day one, laying the groundwork for what is now the world’s largest tech talent accelerator. Their support ensures that geography or circumstance doesn’t limit opportunity—only skill and commitment.”

The 3MTT initiative is moving into its next phase, with over 1.8 million applications received and preparations underway for a nationwide scale-up. This includes the rollout of the Nigeria Talent Cities Initiative, targeting the creation of 500,000 new jobs by 2027 by building digital outsourcing campuses and innovation hubs.

MTN Nigeria’s interventions are tackling some of the biggest challenges facing aspiring tech professionals—especially those from underserved communities—by removing barriers such as affordability, infrastructure, and access to learning tools.

Students receive fully funded scholarships, mentorship, and exposure to the digital economy—paving the way for local productivity and global competitiveness.

“As a company rooted in Africa’s progress, we understand the power of digital skills,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria. “Our commitment to 3MTT is a direct investment in Nigeria’s economic resilience, youth empowerment, and future global relevance.”

MTN’s role in the 3MTT Programme reflects its larger mission to drive digital and economic inclusion through strategic collaboration. The company continues to work closely with the Ministry, the Pan-African United Foundation, Lagos Business School, and other stakeholders to build a scalable, sustainable pipeline of technical talent.
