‘I’ll Back Mahama’s Third-Term Bid If Supreme Court Approves It’ – Hamza Suhuyini
A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini, says he would support a President John Dramani Mahama third-term bid if the Supreme Court rules that the Constitution permits it.
His comments come after a Ghanaian citizen filed a writ at the Supreme Court seeking a declaration that a person who has served two separate, non-consecutive terms as president remains eligible to contest the presidency again.
The suit was filed on July 9, 2026, by Ganiwu Alhassan, a teacher from Kpandai in the Northern Region, against the Attorney-General. Filed through his lawyer, Kwasi Afrifa of O & A Legal Consult in Kumasi, the writ asks the court to interpret Article 66(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides that a person shall not be elected to hold the office of president for more than two terms.
Alhassan argues that the provision only prohibits a person from serving more than two consecutive terms and does not prevent someone who has served two separate, non-consecutive terms from contesting the presidency again.
He is asking the court to declare that any attempt to bar such a person from seeking re-election would be inconsistent with the Constitution.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Saturday, July 11, Suhuyini said that he would respect whatever decision the Supreme Court reaches on the matter.
“You think I will stand in the way of the president if the court of the country says that he should go for a third term? That is a decision of the Supreme Court,” he said.
Suhuyini expressed his personal admiration for President Mahama, saying he would support a third-term bid if the law permits it.
“This is a president I believe in with every fibre of my being and confidence. My interest is for President Mahama to go for a third term. Does the law allow it? I don’t know. If the law does not allow it, I will respect it, but if the law allows it, I will celebrate it, project it and pursue that agenda without any form of reservation,” he stated.
He clarified that neither he nor the NDC had any connection with the legal action before the court.
“We have no association with whatever is going on,” he said.
However, President Mahama, who is serving a second, non-consecutive term after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s eight-year tenure, has repeatedly stated that he has no intention of amending the Constitution to pursue a third term.
Speaking in Singapore in August 2025, President Mahama reiterated that he had no plans to seek a third term as president.
