Gov’t To Transform Glefe Dump Into Manure And Plastic Recycling Hub- Accra Mayor
The Mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Micheal Allotey Kpakpo, has announced plans to transform the major dumping site at Glefe in Dansoman into a modern waste management and recycling facility.
According to the mayor, the government has engaged foreign investors to support a comprehensive redevelopment of the site, with the goal of converting waste into useful resources while improving environmental conditions in the area.
He explained that the project will focus on turning organic waste into manure and recycling plastics collected from the dump, a move aimed at reducing pollution and promoting sustainable waste management practices.

Speaking in an interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive, Mayor Kpakpo said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to address persistent sanitation challenges affecting residents of Glefe and surrounding communities.
Although he has been in office for about a year, he noted that long-term planning is already underway to significantly improve living conditions in the area.
“We have better plans to revamp the community and remove the stench from the environment,” he stated, emphasising the importance of restoring environmental dignity and public health in the community.
The proposed redevelopment reflects a shift toward waste-to-resource solutions, where refuse is processed into economically valuable products such as fertiliser and recyclable materials.
Officials believe the initiative will not only reduce landfill pressure but also support agriculture through manure production and strengthen Ghana’s recycling ecosystem by recovering plastics that would otherwise contribute to environmental degradation.
Once implemented, the project is expected to reduce odour pollution, improve sanitation standards, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in Glefe and nearby parts of Dansoman.
The AMA says further details on timelines and implementation phases will be communicated as engagement with investors progresses.
