President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a strong message of encouragement to the Black Stars ahead of their crucial World Cup clash against Panama, assuring the team of the full backing and prayers of the nation.

In a pre-match address, the president said he felt compelled to personally reach out to the players to express the confidence Ghanaians have in their ability to deliver on the global stage.

“I felt that before this match I must personally call you and tell you how all of us are praying for you and that we have confidence in you to be able to make it,” he said.

The President disclosed that he had also tasked the Vice President, Professor Nana Opoku-Agyemang, to convey the nation’s encouragement to the team, underscoring the importance the government places on the Black Stars’ performance.

President Mahama commended the team’s preparations so far, noting that their performances in friendly matches had shown steady improvement.

“You have done well so far… with every match you improved, and it is my hope that we will use Panama to set the stage for a brilliant performance,” he said.

He urged the players to seize the moment and rise to the expectations of not only Ghana but the entire African continent, drawing parallels to the team’s historic run at the 2010 World Cup.

“The whole of Africa is looking up to you like they did in 2010… we are looking to you again to rise up to that occasion,” he added.

The president also called for unity within the squad, urging players to work together under the leadership of captain Jordan Ayew.

He acknowledged the presence and influence of former national team greats Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah, noting that their experience continues to serve as a source of inspiration for the current squad.

President Mahama further expressed confidence in the technical team, despite the relatively short preparation period under the new head coach.

In a passionate conclusion, the president emphasised that Ghanaians across the country would be fully behind the team during the match.

“The whole of Ghana says I should tell you that tonight we’re not sleeping. The match will be telecast at 11pm, and we will all stay awake, kneeling and praying throughout the 90 minutes,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the team would emerge victorious, urging them to make the nation proud.

The Black Stars face Panama later tonight in a match seen as critical to their World Cup campaign, with millions of Ghanaians expected to rally behind the team.
