Parliament was thrown into a lively and humorous exchange on Tuesday as MPs debated dress code flexibility in anticipation of Ghana’s Black Stars’ World Cup match against Panama.

The discussion was sparked by Kpandai MP, Hon. Matthew Nyindam, who appealed for relaxed dress code rules in the House, arguing that the occasion called for national solidarity and support for the Black Stars.

He noted that the day was significant for the country, with Ghanaians expecting the national team to “lift the flag of Ghana very high", and suggested that Members of Parliament be allowed to appear in national colours.

“Maybe with your leave, you could soften the rules governing the dress code,” he said, adding that the chief whip had appeared in attire that, while patriotic, did not strictly conform to parliamentary dress regulations.

In a moment that drew laughter in the Chamber, he remarked, “He is naked… well, he is naked,” before quickly clarifying the intent of his submission.

Responding to the remarks, the Majority Chief Whip and MP for South Dayi, Hon. Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, defended his attire, insisting it was appropriate and rooted in national pride.

He expressed surprise at the criticism, stressing that his dress reflected solidarity with the national team ahead of their crucial fixture.

“My apparel is a patriotic one,” he said, referencing a similar occasion during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar when Parliament had also shown support for the national team.

He further reminded the House that Members had previously dressed in jerseys during national sporting events and argued that the same spirit should apply.

Hon. Dafeamekpor also appealed for temporary flexibility in the dress code, noting that members had not been formally informed in advance to appear in national colours.

He explained that efforts were underway to distribute jerseys to MPs who did not have them, adding that dozens had already been shared and more were being sourced.

According to him, Parliament should reflect the national mood, especially as citizens across the country prepared to support the Black Stars in their match against Panama later in the day.

The exchange ended on a humorous note as the chief whip dismissed claims about improper attire, insisting he was “properly apparelled” for the occasion and fully aligned with the national spirit.

The Speaker was subsequently urged to grant leave for Members to appear in jerseys, as the House sought to balance parliamentary decorum with expressions of national pride.

The moment added a rare light-hearted atmosphere to proceedings, reflecting the widespread excitement ahead of Ghana’s World Cup fixture.
