Fibre Internet Is a Necessity Not A Luxury – MTN Chief Home Officer
MTN Ghana's Chief Home Officer, Richard Acheampong, has challenged the perception that fibre broadband is only for wealthy households, insisting that reliable home internet has become an essential service rather than a luxury.
Speaking on the growing importance of home connectivity, Acheampong said many Ghanaians still question why they need fibre internet when mobile data is readily available.
He explained that while mobile internet serves individuals on the move, fibre broadband is designed to support entire households where multiple users and devices require fast, stable connectivity simultaneously.
"People don't see the real value for fibre because they ask, 'Why do I need another internet when I already have mobile internet?'" he said.
Acheampong noted that a single home can have as many as 50 connected devices, including televisions, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, security cameras and smart appliances.
He said fibre provides significantly greater bandwidth, making it suitable for online learning, video conferencing, ultra-high-definition streaming and remote work.
The MTN executive argued that discussions about fibre should focus less on cost and more on long-term value.
"It's not even about the price. It's about the value you derive from reliable connectivity," he said.
Acheampong recounted a visit by MTN staff to a modest wooden house connected to fibre internet, where children were using the service for schoolwork and research.
He described the experience as a reminder that digital infrastructure can help bridge educational and economic inequalities.
"We are building a bridge where a child from that home can have the same opportunities as a child living in a mansion," he stated.
He called for greater public education on the benefits of home broadband, saying increased awareness would encourage more households to embrace fibre connectivity.
