DVLA Rolls Out ‘26’ Plates As New Regime Stalls

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that it has officially transitioned from the “25” to the “26” vehicle number plate suffix, effective Friday, January 2, 2026, following delays in the rollout of a new vehicle registration system.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Director of Corporate Affairs at the DVLA, Stephen Attuh, explained that the Authority was forced to maintain the existing year-based registration regime because the necessary legal amendments could not be completed before Parliament went on recess.

According to him, amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2180), which are required to introduce the new number plate system, were not passed in time.

“The specific regulations in the L.I. 2180, which we require to amend before we can introduce the plate, were not successfully done before Parliament went on recess. And so, being a law-guided institution, that regime must be in place before we can roll out the new licence plate. In the absence of that, we are compelled to continue with the current registration system,” he explained.

The DVLA had planned to roll out a new number plate system that would eliminate the year-based suffixes entirely. The proposed plates were also designed to be RFID-enabled, allowing for digital scanning to support vehicle tracking, road tolling, speed monitoring, and enhanced law enforcement.

However, the failure to pass the required legislative amendments stalled the implementation of the new system.

“So, we’ve moved from the suffix ‘25’ for the year 2025 to the suffix ‘26’ beginning today. Instead of the original plan of taking away the suffix, unfortunately, because the amendments could not go through, we will continue with this system until the law is amended. Once that is done, we will roll out the new platform and issue the new plates,” Mr Attuh added.

The DVLA has assured the public that once Parliament reconvenes and passes the necessary amendments, the Authority will proceed with the implementation of the new number plate system and its accompanying digital platform.
