Cobham Satcom has announced a strategic merger between one of its divisions and Denmark-based Gatehouse Satcom, a move the company says will significantly accelerate the adoption of standardised 5G non-terrestrial network (NTN) technologies across commercial, government, defence and direct-to-device (D2D) markets.
While terms of the agreement were not disclosed, Cobham Satcom stated that the newly formed entity will operate as its subsidiary, with Cobham Satcom retaining majority ownership. CEO Christophe Duret characterised the arrangement as an acquisition, signalling the strategic importance of the deal to the company’s long-term vision.
The new entity will be led by Gatehouse Satcom CEO Kenney Schmidt Christiansen, whose team brings deep expertise in 5G NTN software development.

Cobham Satcom currently provides RAN platforms and critical ground infrastructure, while Gatehouse Satcom is recognised for its advanced software solutions supporting 5G NTN systems. Together, the merged business aims to build on proven technologies already deployed across LEO, MEO and GEO satellite constellations.
A key focus of the venture will be expanding development of 3GPP-compatible 5G NTN software and next-generation 5G/6G NTN connectivity solutions tailored to clients in maritime, defence, IoT, enterprise and D2D sectors worldwide.
Christiansen said partnering with Cobham Satcom would give Gatehouse Satcom “the scale and talent to accelerate our ambitions,” adding that the combined strength would drive the creation of world-class hardware and software for multi-market customers.
Duret noted the acquisition opens “significant strategic opportunities” at a time when the satellite communications industry is undergoing rapid transformation driven by data demand, hybrid networks and global connectivity shifts.
The transaction is expected to close pending regulatory approval.
