Government Pushes Intellectual Property Protection, Local Content Quotas for Creative Industry

The government is strengthening efforts to improve intellectual property protection, local content requirements and professional training as part of measures to support Ghana's tourism, culture and creative arts sector.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Hon. Yussif Issaka Jajah, disclosed this during the launch of MTN One TV, a Pan-African video streaming platform designed to showcase African entertainment.

He said the measures formed part of broader efforts to build an environment in which Ghanaian creativity could thrive and generate greater economic value for artists, filmmakers, producers and other industry professionals.

According to Mr Jajah, Ghana's creative industry has a strong cultural foundation, but preserving that heritage must go hand in hand with creating jobs, sustainable livelihoods and commercial opportunities.

“Under the revised cultural policy of Ghana, our focus is on making culture not just beautiful but valuable,” he said.

He explained that collaboration and digital innovation were essential to achieving the objective, particularly as technology continued to create new ways of producing, distributing and consuming entertainment.

The Deputy Minister said the government could not transform the sector alone and would need the active participation of telecommunications companies, content creators, producers, actors, regulators and digital platforms.

He commended MTN Ghana for launching One TV, noting that the platform could help Ghanaian content reach wider audiences and create new opportunities for local creators.

Mr Jajah also encouraged industry stakeholders to identify existing challenges, share ideas and develop practical solutions that could strengthen the creative economy.

He said improving the standards of Ghanaian films and other creative products would be important to expanding their reach and competitiveness in international markets.

The government, he added, remained committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that digital innovation translates into tangible benefits for Ghana's creative professionals and the wider economy.
