Vice President Leads Government Delegation to Console Families of Helicopter Crash Victims

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has confirmed that Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is leading a high-level government delegation to offer official condolences to the families of those who perished in last Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash.

Speaking to JoyNews at the Jubilee House, Mr. Iddrisu described the deaths of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Dr. Alhaji Murtala Mohammed, and NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong as an irreplaceable loss to Ghana.

“The Vice President is now leading a government delegation to formally convey the sad passing of our colleagues,” he stated.

According to the minister, two condolence teams have been constituted. The first, led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and the National Chairman of the NDC, will travel to Koforidua with the support of the Army Commander. The second team will visit the remaining bereaved families across the country to offer the government’s solidarity and assistance.

“Do accept our sympathy and condolences. It is a very difficult moment for all of us,” Mr. Iddrisu said, noting that the deaths had left a deep void both in government and within the communities the victims served.

The August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region claimed eight lives—three senior government officials, two political figures, and three Ghana Armed Forces personnel. The delegation was travelling to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a flagship government initiative aimed at reforming Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.

National flags remain at half-mast as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
