VIAVI unveils upgraded CX300 simulator to enhance mission-critical TETRA radio testing
VIAVI Solutions Inc. has introduced a new TETRA Mobile Station (MS) radio base station simulator option for its field-portable CX300 communications service monitor, aimed at improving the speed and realism of testing mission-critical communication systems used by emergency and security services.
The upgrade allows full validation of radios without requiring them to be placed in T1 test mode, enabling technicians to test devices under real operational conditions and significantly streamlining field and laboratory workflows.
The enhancement forms part of the company’s broader push to strengthen its position in mission-critical communications testing, particularly for systems used by public safety agencies, transport operators and government networks.
TETRA, or Terrestrial Trunked Radio, is a globally recognised open standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It is widely used for secure, resilient voice and data communication in environments where reliability is essential, including emergency response, rail, aviation and utility operations.
According to VIAVI, the new CX300 option is delivered as a software-keyed upgrade, requiring no additional hardware investment. It enables full testing of TETRA MS radios, including transmitter parametric measurements such as power profile, RF power, carrier frequency offset, burst timing and modulation accuracy.
It also supports call processing and receiver BER/MER loopback testing while eliminating the need to place the radio under test into a dedicated test mode, a change the company says improves efficiency and better reflects real-world performance.
“VIAVI has been the benchmark for TETRA radio testing for more than two decades, and the CX300 TETRA MS option is the next step in that tradition,” said Wayne Wong, Director of Product Management for Radio Test at VIAVI Solutions. “This upgrade lets technicians test a TETRA mobile station the way it actually operates in the field, registering to a base station without requiring any special test mode on the radio.”
The CX300 platform supports multiple land mobile radio (LMR) and private mobile radio (PMR) protocols, including TETRA, P25, DMR (MOTOTRBO) and NXDN. It integrates a wide range of testing capabilities such as spectrum analysis, signal generation and analysis, cable and antenna testing, vector network analysis, power measurement, audio analysis and automated alignment tools via VIAVI AutoTest.
Industry analysts note that demand for more efficient and field-realistic testing tools has grown alongside increasing reliance on secure communications networks, particularly in public safety and critical infrastructure sectors.
VIAVI also confirmed that the upgrade includes migration support for users of its legacy 3920B platform, ensuring continuity for existing customers transitioning to the CX300 system.
The development reinforces VIAVI’s long-standing role in mission-critical communications testing as agencies and industries continue to modernise their secure radio networks.
