Sukparu Urges MTN One TV to Invest in New Ghanaian Productions
Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has urged MTN Ghana to go beyond distributing local content and invest directly in the production of new Ghanaian films, television programmes and other creative works.

He said the success of MTN One TV, a Pan-African video streaming service, should be measured not only by the number of viewers it attracts but also by its contribution to the growth of Ghana’s creative industry.

Speaking at the launch of the platform, Mr Sukparu said MTN had the networks, technology, platforms and audience needed to support the development of a stronger digital entertainment ecosystem.

He encouraged the telecommunications company to commission new Ghanaian productions alongside licensing existing works while creating opportunities for emerging talents.

“The platform should support the commissioning of new Ghanaian production alongside licensing existing works,” he said.

Mr Sukparu noted that Ghana had no shortage of creative talent or compelling stories, citing the country’s history of successful film and television productions that had reached audiences locally and internationally.

However, he said the industry needed stronger systems to ensure creators benefited fairly and sustainably from their work.

The Deputy Minister also urged MTN Ghana to work with the government to strengthen support mechanisms for the creative sector, including the proposed Creative Arts Development Fund, which he said had received seed funding of GH¢20 million.

He explained that corporate investment was necessary to complement government efforts to create jobs, support creative enterprises and expand the contribution of the sector to economic growth.

Mr Sukparu said the government would continue to promote an enabling policy and regulatory environment, improve digital infrastructure and strengthen intellectual property protection.

He expressed hope that MTN One TV would become more than a streaming platform by helping build an ecosystem in which Ghanaian creators could secure investment, reach wider audiences and generate sustainable income.
