The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has expressed deep outrage over recent attacks on public sector workers and the destruction of state properties allegedly perpetrated by individuals claiming allegiance to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a press statement signed by Secretary General Joshua Ansah, the TUC described the actions as unwarranted, lawless, and detrimental to Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy.
The statement highlighted incidents where groups have invaded state institutions, locked offices, and caused mayhem, sometimes in the presence of police officers who appeared unwilling or incapable of intervening.
“These acts of vandalism have stained an otherwise peaceful election and a beautiful transfer of political power, which has earned Ghana praise globally,” the TUC noted.
The TUC urged President John Dramani Mahama to move beyond condemning the violent acts and take decisive action. Specifically, the statement called for empowering the Ghana Police Service to arrest and prosecute individuals who engage in such unlawful activities under the guise of political affiliation.
“The government will have to find resources to fix the damage caused to state properties with taxpayers’ money, which could have been used to fix the economy,” the statement emphasised.
The TUC also appealed to Ghanaians to refrain from behaviours that tarnish the country’s reputation, particularly following the peaceful political transition on January 7, 2025.
“These shameful behaviours undermine Ghana’s hard-earned reputation under the Fourth Republic and must be condemned by all well-meaning citizens,” the union stressed.
The statement concluded with a strong call for accountability and respect for the rule of law, urging authorities to act swiftly to prevent further incidents of vandalism and attacks on workers.
The TUC’s call comes amidst growing concerns over political vigilantism and its implications for governance and public safety. Many Ghanaians have also criticised the perceived inaction of the police, further fuelling demands for immediate intervention to uphold law and order.
