At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, Telefónica’s Chief Digital Officer, Chema Alonso, announced a series of major partnerships and technological advancements under the GSMA-led Open Gateway initiative, which aims to transform telecom networks into digital service platforms.
Since its launch at MWC 2023, Open Gateway has gained traction, with Telefónica securing over 50 global partnerships and collaborating with 20+ commercial partners to expand the adoption of Open Gateway APIs worldwide.
Building on their MWC 2024 collaboration, Telefónica and TikTok are extending their “Number Verification” API integration across Europe after a successful rollout. This API eliminates the need for SMS-based authentication, offering users a more seamless and secure login experience.

The companies also announced plans to co-develop a new “Age Verification” API under the CAMARA framework, an open-source initiative by GSMA and the Linux Foundation. This API will strengthen TikTok’s age assurance measures, ensuring safer digital experiences for younger users.
Ride-hailing platform Cabify is adopting Telefónica’s “Number Verification” API to streamline its user registration process. This eliminates SMS delays and third-party verification, enabling users to sign up faster and more securely.
Telefónica has signed an agreement with the Community of Madrid’s Digitalisation Council to integrate Open Gateway APIs into public administration. This initiative will modernise key sectors like healthcare, transportation, justice, and tourism, improving efficiency and accessibility for residents.
Telefónica and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are partnering to launch an innovation centre focused on developing SaaS solutions for telecommunications companies.

Google’s Christiaan Brand joined Telefónica’s MWC presentation to confirm that the service will be available for both Google ecosystem apps and third-party developers using Firebase.
Telefónica’s Open Gateway initiative is part of a broader industry shift, with AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile, and Telenor also developing similar implementations. The commercial rollout of these services is expected before the end of 2025.
