‘Students Using Free SHS Tablets To Watch Porn’ – Haruna Iddrisu
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has voiced serious concern over reports that some students are using government-issued tablets to access pornographic material.
The government is currently distributing 1.3 million tablets to students in all public senior high schools under the Free SHS programme as part of efforts to enhance digital learning nationwide.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 27, the Minister revealed that about 980,000 of the devices have already been deployed, but many lack the necessary restrictions to limit their use strictly to academic purposes.

“I inherited a contract with about 337 million US dollars, where some 1.3 million tablets were to be distributed across the country to all free senior high schools so that learners can have access to digital tools. I’m told that the deployment of that is around 980,000,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu disclosed that his attention had been drawn to incidents of students using the uncustomised tablets to browse pornographic websites. “Many of the devices are not customised, and the students are using them for other purposes, including pornography, which is not acceptable,” he lamented.
He stressed the need for the devices to be configured appropriately to prevent further misuse.
“Mr Speaker, the government is taking a high view of it, and there must be restrictions as to what the tablets can be used for, and they should be used strictly for the purpose of study,” he added.
The Minister assured Parliament that measures would be taken to ensure the tablets are fully customised for educational use, including the installation of content filters and learning-specific applications.
The distribution of the tablets forms part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, aimed at equipping students under the Free SHS policy with essential technological skills to compete in an increasingly digital world.
