Togbe Kwasi Amedor III, the sub-divisional chief of Mepe Gbavie-Dekume in the Volta Region, has called on the government to provide urgent assistance following a skin disease outbreak affecting residents in the Avetakpo farming community.
The outbreak has led to severe discomfort, including sleep deprivation and intense bodily pain, primarily impacting children and adults in the area.

In his appeal, the chief explained that despite the gravity of the situation, affected individuals are unable to access medical treatment due to financial constraints. The community was informed by health officials from the Ho East District Health Directorate that treatment would require GH₵ 6,642.50, a sum the community cannot afford.
“We are pleading with the government to come to our aid because we are not able to raise the total of GH₵ 6,642.50 estimated budget,” Chief Togbe Amedor III said, highlighting the urgent need for medical intervention.
To date, over 46 individuals in the community have been affected, and the disease has spread to neighbouring areas. The chief emphasised the lack of clarity from health officials, who have not disclosed the name or cause of the disease.
In addition to the financial challenges, Togbe Amedor III pointed to the poor access to clean drinking water as a potential factor contributing to the outbreak. Residents of the community are forced to share water sources with cattle, increasing the risk of contamination.
The chief has called for immediate government support to provide the necessary funds for medical treatment and to implement measures that will prevent the further spread of the disease, stressing the need for more information on how to tackle the issue effectively.
